2 – 21 April 2014

In early January I read, rather, re-read Andre Gide’s interpretation of the life of Theseus. It got me thinking of the particulars that make up an individual and what defines them. A life. Whether we become and develop because of our experiences or in spite of them. The notion that the thin line between hero and victim, triumph and defeat is largely influenced by the individual’s mentality and circumstance, and one’s idea of, indifference to, acceptance or even fear of the nature of destiny, fate, time, love, happiness and all that.

That reading was the starting point for these works. Each piece relates to each day (or thereabouts) of last summer and my experiences, realisations, meditations and nonsense during this stimulating though brief season.  From breaking in the new shoes of sudden love, to questioning ideas of masculinity and its (my) penis, human fallibility, the pertinence of fables and mythology, self-mythology, morality, heredity, the mysticism of natural phenomena and more ponderings. I thought to share all of it. These pieces, then, are the incandescent, vital rants of a dramatic and emotional man under aloof self-examination. Soit!

All works begun & completed between January & March 2014 in mixed media & various objects on paper 420 x 297mm
